Masquerade Lace Bra Kit

Meet one part of our three-part Mardi Gras capsule wardrobe. This one celebrates the purple color, and is named for the Masquerade celebration that goes along with the festivities in New Orleans. This lace is rich with diamonds -- lots of shapes and even some shine in the form of sequins. Our Featured Artist Jennie used our Umber silk as the backdrop for the lace, and we think it's stunning. We recommend that you upgrade to the silk if you can swing it. Otherwise, use Thistledown under the lace and Imperial surrounding the lace. If you overlay your lace onto a solid Imperial, you'll lose a lot of the embroidered detail. Jennie also made a darling bodysuit with the lace, and she combined her silk and lace with Orchid for that piece. Check out the French Quarter kit for the coordinating green pieces, and pick up the optional tulle skirt add on if you want the full look.

Jennie's longline bra uses her Vivien V1 cups which she converted to a darted cup to best display the lace, and used the Grace frame extended into a longline, and modified to use the partial band cups. She used her own Charlotte Knickers pattern (available at Annie and Myra's) for the green undies. She made the Godiva bodysuit by hacking a variety of patterns together, including the Rey bra back and the Charlotte knickers. It's so cute! Don't you love the hat that pulls everything together??

This bra kit features your choice of Stretch Silk Satin, Microduoplex, Super Simplex, Tricot, Sheer Cup Lining, Bra Tulle or Microlycra as the base fabric. One kit contains everything that you need to make a bra and has enough fabric for 2 with many sizes if you pick up an extra bra finishing kit. To get the second bra with larger sizes, upgrade to the half yard of cup fabric and add a bra finishing kit.

Your panty will match your lace unless you specify otherwise. As always, feel free to choose your favorite elastics or narrow lace (please leave us a note if you don't see your choice!). Sewing Notes:
The strength of our microduoplex fabric, which makes it so wonderful for bras, also makes it hard to puncture with needles and pins. This is true with most duoplex fabrics. Use either fine silk pins or Wonder Clips to pin (I find Wonder Clips work best), and a Microtex 80/12 needle with a smooth thread like Superior Threads So Fine or Mettler Metrosene to make it easy to sew. In my testing, the So Fine thread and Microtex 80/12 won the challenge of the nicest stitch on microduoplex, and as long as my presser foot completely covered the seam allowance, I found it just as easy to sew as quilting cotton. I moved the needle to the right to set my seam allowance at 1/4" since my presser foot is a bit wide. I find it works well to saturate the lace with liquid starch and let it dry before laying out your pattern pieces and cutting your fabric. This stiffens the lace until you wash it and the lace has enough body to behave well in the sewing process.
